Missed school days will not be replaced
By NORMA MARTINEZ, Managing Editor
Aransas County Independent School District officials received good news about school closures late last week, which eased the concerns regarding missed days.
The Texas Education Agency confirmed on Friday, Sept. 12, school closures from Sept. 10 through Sept. 12 will not have to be made up later in the school year because they were caused by Hurricane Ike.
Each school district will have to submit a waiver to TEA by May 2009 to explain the reason for the missed days.
According to the TEA website, “Districts who have missed instructional days as a result of responding to the threat of Hurricane Ike are eligible to receive an expedited waiver for the missed instructional days.”
In addition, State Rep. Juan Garcia issued a release also on Friday, Sept. 12 which stated school districts around the Coastal Bend which closed for Hurricane Ike will be able to receive full state funding for those missed days.
ACISD Superintendent Joseph Patek said they are pleased at both not having to make up the lost days, as well as being eligible for full state funding.
Patek was not in the ACISD when Hurricane Rita came through, but was in Hallettsville which had to evacuate. He said TEA at that time did not require schools to make up the days, and he expected that would be the case this time as well.
Patek also said ACISD schools reopened Monday without any problems. He said buses ran on schedule. No campuses reported having students absent due to evacuation, he said.
With the exception of a change in the high school football and volleyball game schedules, the ACISD is back to normal, unlike schools in the Houston and Galveston areas, many of which are not open this week, nor will they be for weeks or months.
